Anyone who owns a terrier knows they are a challenging breed. Here's what "bc all terries .com" http://www.bcallterrier.com/terriers.html had to say about them. "You should understand that, because historically they were developed to work independently, most terriers have minds of their own and are fully prepared to use them! Overall, they are intelligent, active and energetic. They love people but can sometimes be territorial towards other dogs." Although they are grouped into the toy breed section in the CKC they shouldn't be underestimated because of their tiny size. This goes without saying for my mothers yorkshire terrier, Coco is one fearless little bitch who is always putting Moses in his place. Funny thing is, people who see us walking together always assume Moses is a troublemaker and Coco's the sweet one...hellz no...you really can't judge a book by the cover.

We are always on the look out for new toy/bone for Moses to chew on, while most products are aimed at smaller breeds we are often left with little options. He's a strong guy who needs a strong device. Let me introduce you to "this & that canine co. http://www.thisandthatcanineco.com/ a Canadian company that produces the longest lasting chew toy/bone for dogs... DEER ATLERS.

Moses give it 2 thumbs up, while I'd give it 2 also but it claims not to break off into smaller pieces but it did, not a huge amount but still i did have to clean up after he'd been chewing on it. I am greatly impressed in how long it has lasted. Moses normally chews through a bone with in a few days and this has lasted more than a month, well worth the cost..$24.00. i would certainly buy him another.

Road Trip

We took a road trip to visit some friends in Toronto this week. Moses is amazing in the car, he never get car sick or antsy, he just lays in the back seat and chills. Halfway there I left him take my spot up front, that's his fav!
This is Maple Walnut, she's half weimaraner/vizsla and all hyper. I'm not sure I could handle a dog with sooo much energy. She super sweet and was completely in love with Moss.

On our way home we stopped off in Port Hope for some lunch as we were walking down Walton st we saw a cute little store called "My Bark Avenue" and looking in the window we see this

At first I thought she was a puppy no,no,no...a mini bullie! My first one ever, sure I had read about them even spoke to different mini breeders. The owner of the store quickly came to greet us. Her name is Cathie Hudson as well as running/owning her own holistic pet supply store she is a mini bull terrier breeder...she's expecting a litter in November!!

Moses has been developing a weird mole type growth on his neck. We didn't think much of it at first but then Fai's thought it might be cancerous. So we took Mos to the vet, they did a quick lookie loo and said "we're not sure". Uh ok ...thanks :(
They said it would be best to have it removed for a mere $350.00.It doesn't really seem to be affecting him, it's just ugly to look at.

Not knowing what this is, is a tad nerve racking...any suggestions would be helpful.

Our Winter Vacation Is Over

It's back to work for me tomorrow. I'm going to miss being home with Moses all day, going to the dog park for hours, sleeping in till noon, but it was fun while it lasted. I'm sure Mos wont go though too much withdrawal as my husband works from home and he'll be here to give him all the love he needs.

How the time flies....boy oh boy!

We've been looking back at photos of Mo and it seems to us he hasn't grow very much in the past while. I kept telling my husband..he'll hit a growth spirt, stop worrying. Don't get us wrong we love him regardless of size but it just seems he must have been the runt of the litter. Maybe it's because he's still young and needs time to develop into the large egg head we had anticipated he'd have.

His dogs are ridiculous and comparing his dogs (puppies) to Mos it's unbelievable the size difference. In the near future we'd love to add a female bully to our family and we might adopted from him. I would love love love to start showing and I know for sure one day I will breed, not any time soon because of costs but perhaps when I retire. Get a place out in the country. I don't ever want to be one of those backyard breeders...fucking idiots who have no idea of what they are doing, breeding anything to anything. It's crazy to me. People aren't in it for the love of the breed but total and complete greed. In my humble (but right) opinion breeding is about the love of the breed and improving it, not breeding brother and sister and dogs with defects....sorry about the rant, I feel very passionate about the issue. Yes, I guess I'm a bit of a dog snob, however not as bad as some "REAL" dog folks. lol.

I have always been into dogs. I worked as a vet tech, for a breeder helping at shows and whelping, did grooming for a while and when I was younger and couldn't afford a dog, I volunteered many years at the human society.

New Toy

Last night hubby and I took Moses to the pet store to buy some new toys. It's a tough challenge as he loves all toys but he destroys them all is about 2 seconds flat. We decided to go with a more expensive toy made of a hard plastic in the shape of a ball and has a rope through it...we'll test it out for awhile and see how it does, if it's good I'll post the band name.

Last weekend we got married!
Unfortunately Moses was not among the attendants. I think it was for the best, knowing him he'd want to jump up on my dress after playing in a mud puddle. Holy where does the time go? for real? I want to make a real effort to write but life always seems to get in the way. To sum up the last little bit...Moses is a tank! he is so so so so strong, i often find myself wondering if I should hit the gym just to keep up.lol, like that will ever happen...not.

This is Biggie, he's Momo's bestest buddy, he's a 10 year old red nose Pit Bull...I'm having a flash back..I think I've written about him before, at any rate he's awesome.

Whenever Biggie and Mo are playing they both get very vocal...most of us know it's doggie trash talk but a lot of people think they're actually fighting and get upset that we allow our dogs to behave is such a manner. Ignorance is bliss or is it?

The Run Around

Since our last up date, we've moved! We are all so much happier in our (we are home owners now) new home. At first Moses didn't know what to think of it all. He had never really seen stairs before and now we have a house full of them. With some coaxing he got the hang of it, we're still getting used to having to go out with him every time he needs to pee. Our last place had a yard, we could just open the door and let him out. We're getting a fence as soon as the ground thaws out.

The other day we noticed that Moses needed his nails cut. While he is normally okay with this procedure, for some reason this time he freaked the hell out. I had him pinned down with the nail cutters in one hand and his left paw in the other, he kicked back with his freshly cut nail....then this. His nail split open my hand...ouch!

The weather has been quite cold here in our sleeping city but that hasn't slowed Moses down one bit. Our walks have been shorter due to the fact that 20 minutes into the hike he begins to lifts his paws with a look of pain in his eyes. Poor guy, poor me...his lack of contact with other dogs and 2 hour walks has left him with no other choice but to find entertainment elsewhere ie the back seat of my car, our bed and shoe rack. Let me explain, I could tell Moses was bord so I thought, why don't we take him for a car ride while we go run our holiday errands. Mind you Mo had always been excellent in the car. When we returned he had completely destroyed the back seat of my car. I was pissed. Mishap number two, we have been letting Mo on the our bed for sometime and again he had always been good...but this time he actually pissed on the bed...again me livid. Mishap number three, he eat our shoes rack...ok not that terrible but still, what in the world happen to my sweet little boy? Truth be told it didn't take me too long to figure out Moses is bord. Now it's my job to find a way to help him burn all this extra energy...any tips?

When two people decide to move in together it's always a lot of work...mentally and physically. Faisal finally moved in today and with a crazy snow storm of 35 centimeters, school buss cancellations and our public transit strike...lets just say things didn't go according to plan. Thankfully we did it! and nobody got hurt...but man, was Moses ever in the way.

It's the first of December and I'm back. Finally broke down and got a new MAC, I really didn't want to out of principle but Fai's convinced me otherwise. Now that I have it I'm in love...Mac's rule and him. In other news Moses is doing amazing, he's in love with the snow. I wasn't sure if it would slow him down. Boy was I wrong...good thing I have my Sorels. Also I'd like to thank all the amazing dog owners that have been trekking out to Brews Pit keeping the trails clean and walkable. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of our walks but I do have a few from our evening at home.

And for Liz, yes we're very happy with the backpack, Momo hasn't been wearing it all that much as it would get wet in the snow.

BooHoo my computer died on me 2 days ago and I have lost all my photos and videos...blurg.
When I get the cash to get another I will be back to posting, as I can't up load personal photos on my work computer. In the meantime Moses is doing well, we have started training him to wear a backpack on our am walks. We feel it's important for Momo to have a job, so we load it with a few cans of tuna to give it some weight. Bull terriers were used for ratting, herding and guarding, since there is no place we can go for him to do any of those jobs we figure the backpack is the next best thing.

First Snow Date

It's only October and the first snow fall has arrived. Moses was curious but not overjoyed by the cold wet stuff. First thing yesterday I tried to take him out for his morning walk but to no avail Momo wouldn't move.

When I got home from work I tried yet again to bring Mosie out for a walk, the second time was much more successful.

Moses started to hop in the snow like a bunny rabbit!

Kira's Birthday

Moses was neutered today...poor guy. The vet said he didn't feel a thing. I dropped him off at 7:30 this morning and picked him up at 4pm. He seemed to be in good spirits despite all the drugs they had given him. I'm happy we decided to neuter him early as I've read it's much more painful the old they get and seeing as how we had no intentions of breeding him...why not do it while he's still young. I was concerned about his development as I've read conflicting articles regarding castration stunting a dogs growth. However nothing scientific only speculation. I trust our vet and think it was the best decision for our Momo. We were told that the healing processes it as little as a week and we should try and keep him quite for 2-3 days. They also gave us a cone to put around his head in case of excessive licking. Let's hope it doesn't come to that!

One of Mosies favorite toys is a plush duck. It originally belonged to our friends dog but was then stole by Eden, then was later stolen by Moses. Such is the circle of life. The poor duck has a broken neck but he still has a few chews left to him.

Turns out, styrofoam cups are a big no-no in his books and he's a little jealous over my affection for Mr. Millan. What a weekend we've had, long walks,turkey,episodes of the dog whisperer,summer pudding,family visits, red wine and good times.

Yesterday afternoon we went over to my mum's place, where Moses is always more than welcome. As you can see in the photo mum has a pool, and if you remember a previous summer posting, Momo is not a fan of water. I'm not sure what he was thinking, maybe he thought the pool was a giant water bowl but he was trying to drink from it. We told him not to but Moses is a tenacious pup and kept going back for more until he fell in the pool head first. The whole point of getting a bigger vehicle was so Moses could have a spot all his own and not having to set on anyone's lap, well he isn't fond of being "segregated" to the back of the car so he now jumps in the front to sit with her majesty Eden.

I am a hot head, I'll admit it. I get very excited and passionate about topics that I feel strongly about. Case in point...BULL TERRIERS or not PIT BULLS. I love love love pit bulls, but sad to say to all you ignorant people out there that my Moses is not a pit bull.

As a trainer, I have found that since the headlines about this legislation have faded from the public mind, some people have taken on a new puppy in good faith but which does fall under the category of "....or a dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to these dogs". Their legal liability is huge. That is the only reason I asked the question.

Having said that, you may indeed be right, and I stand corrected. My apologies.

Yes, I did get an apology but what does her ignorance say about even the professionals. Not much in my humble opinion. I would also like to argue that it is not out of the public's mind, as I face discrimination all the time about my dog being a "pit bull".

We've started taking obedience class with Moses but before we signed up, I researched most of the trainers this city has to offer. I ended up finding this one trainer who had extensive experience with bully. I was super excited to begin working and learning. Yesterday we had our 3rd class...however I'm sad to report we're practicing the same old thing. Walking around a bunch of chair, then asking our dogs to sit every 4 minutes. I fully understand the purpose of teaching heeling and sitting but for 3 classes in a row? I asked the trainer if we could do some private lesson in conjunction with our group lessons to work on some of my major concerns with Moses's behavour (ex jumping and nipping). I was told that whatever I would learn in the private lesson I would learn in the group. Oh ok, so now can you tell me why, we keep walking around in circles? It's very disappointing as Moses is extremely bord with the classes and chooses not participate. He'll just lay there, so the trainer told me not to feed him before class. No problem, I didn't feed him yesterday before class. He still just laid there, the trainer then told me I am not to allow him to play or go for a walk before class...wtf? I told the trainer he's not tired he's bord (just like me) . I know this because when the dogs are given a play break (which is two 10min breaks within an hour class) Moses is running with the rest of them. My partner keeps reminding me the trainer isn't Cesar Millan! Just to let you know I am obsessed with The Dog Whisperer...he's my mentor, my guru, my spiritual leader. To me he can do no wrong, everything he says about dog sociology, being the pack leader and calm assertive energy make total sense to me. If you don't know who he is check him out!

Back to my rant....I just feel like I've wasted a bunch of money on some trainer who is teaching me nothing. I intend to finish the classes to the bitter end, I just wish I could find a trainer who is as passionate about his job as Cesar and didn't wast people's time and money.

The weekends always go by way to fast. This one was especially fun as we took a trip up to visit Moses's mother (Inca) and brother (Elvis). Moses was his usual self, happy and excitable. All the dogs got to play for a few hours. It was Eden's first time meeting them, she just feel in love with Inca. I think because she's the calmest one of the bunch. Seeing as it was Elvis's first time around kids he did extremely well, come to think of it, he wouldn't leave her side.

October is a busy month for our family. It was my dad's birthday yesterday, my step mum's birthday on the 11th and mine on the 15th! We celebrated dads yesterday with ice cream cake and silliness. Moses joined in for all the fun. I'm so happy my extended family is accepting of him in their home. He was on his best behavior!!

Tooth Fairy

Moses is a whooping 5 month old and guess what else...he lost a tooth ( I'm sure there's more)!
A few days ago Moses was chewing on something and whenever I can't see it, I go diggin', way into his mouth I go, in search of what lies inside. To my great surprise I found him chewing on his own tooth. I think it's his pre-moler but maybe I'm wrong. Take a look.

Eden was a tad jealous that he's already losing his baby teeth and she still has all of hers. Don't worry my darlin' yours will be falling out soon enough.

We've give Moses a few baths since he's been with us but this was the first time we ever took photos of the event...yes it's an event! Eden puts on her bathing suit and I strip down to my undies because everyone gets wet

Everyday Moses and I walk E to school and pick her up in the afternoon. Today one of her little friends come out the meet Moses, he was a real gentlemen.

We have recently discovered Moses great love of soccer and luckly for him and us there is a soccer field close by (but these photos where taken in a basketball court)

In other news, Moses started level one obedience...I'll keep you posted on his progress. I do have to say, he was the best behaved dog in the class. However I wasn't singing his praises this morning when he ran away on me with our cat, 20 minutes I was calling out for him. I started to panic and almost began to cry. I decided to go back home and call my partner for advice...well, well guess who was sitting at the front door waiting for me. MOSES, I gave him a long lecture in a harsh voice. Lets hope nothing like that ever happens again. He'll be staying on leash for the next few days, just in case.

No Kevin Costner, was not there...but Nanook, Ricky & Kira where. My neighbor had her daughters visiting and they brought their huskies (she also invited me over for cake, but that's a whole other story...ummm cake). All the dogs played great together. I love living in a community where there are other animal lovers except for unit 207 but their moving!!!!

UPDATE

Total costs has of the morning of the 12th was $4143.55. As of Aug 12th there is $1710.54 still owed on the bill for Zues. This unfortunately does not include the daily cost for his care at the hospital witch are around $600 a day for the 13th and 14th. The vet was going to stop all care on the 11th if we were unable to come up with another $1500 for a plasma transfusion they needed to do. We were able to come up with that thanks to a generous donation from the Willy Foundation in the states and the procedure was a success. As of this morning Zues is off intravenous drugs and walking around and eating small amounts. There is still some concern since is blood pressure is still high. He maybe be ready to be discharged on the 15th but the next 3-5 days are important. If the suechers holding the intestine together should leak or fail to hold he will need a far more expensive surgery from a specialist at the Alta-vista Animal Hospital since the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital does not have a board certified specialist. We hope to have Zues back home soon and back to his old self. All donations do need to go to the Ottawa Veterinary Hospital. It is important that it is made clear that it is for Zues. Moving, Shaking

Oh fall in in the air, the kids are back at school, the mornings are chilly and it dark by 7:18pm (to be exact). Since I've gone back to work Moses is accepting the transition very well. He knows we wake up at 6am, we eat breakfast, we walk Eden to school then play till 8, then it's back to his crate till 3. I was taking him out in the woods behind my house for an hour or so but it just wasn't cutting it, he had way too much energy to only walk for an hour plus we'd never see any other dogs. He's a social guy, he need to see other pups, so I've been taking him to Brew's Pit after work. We stay for a good 2hrs. It's well worth the drive and he's not driving me crazy when we get back home. On Wednesdays it's a real juggling act because my daughter has karate...but we make it work! Here's some photo I took today on our walk through the pit.

Last weekend we attended the B.A.R.K picnic and I have to say we had a gay o'l time! There were a lot of dogs and a ton of free treats. I think that was Mosie's favorite part. We entered 2 of the competitions but lost. I'm not sure how it was possible that Moses lost for best looking but he did. The judges must have been blind. We also lost for best dressed. Look at the bow tie, how could he not win, confusing I know.

My boyfriend informed me today that I haven't updated the blog in awhile..ops! Even though I'm off I feel like I'm a busy lady. Here I am to share with you a video of Moses and me, dancing to one of my new favorite tunes....Banjo Girl. I play the banjo..not well but I can play. Moses can dance but I'm not sure how into it he really is? I think he loves me enough that he would do almost anything, accept walk on leash. Silly man.

I also wanted to say that Mosies ears are both full erect...hurry! He turned a whole 4 months on Sunday, we didn't have a party or anything but we celebrated in our hearts.

My neighbor is baby sitting her daughters dog named Toby he's a 3 year old chihuahua. He's the smallest dog I've ever seen. Toby is fearless and doesn't mind putting even the biggest dog in it's place. Moses quite enjoyed being dominated by him. That's one of the many reasons I love Moses, he can be submissive and dominate...the perfect pup (well close there to)

Teeth

I've noticed within the last week or so Moses has lost some teeth, 3 be exact! I tried to take some photos but did have much luck.

Also his speed has really picked up, before when a dog wanted to play chase with him he would just lay down and do nothing now he's running like there's no tomorrow. Mind you he's still tripping over his own paws, very adorable. He did start one nasty habit of jumping up on people, he doesn't really do it to me, I guess cause I'm the boss but always on strangers. They say oh it's ok but I'm not ok with it...he needs to learn and I have the utmost of confident that he will...in time

I wasn't too surprised at how I almost aced the test but still makes ya think.

My mum & brother came over today and she had been really nervous about meeting Moses. Not that she's terribly afraid of dog but she has a little yorkie and was fearful that Moses might hurt her. In truth they weren't the best of friends her dog acually stated puking from fear when she saw Moses..hehehe. CoCo is a big chicken and ever time Moses would even look at her, she would cry. I guess that's what happen when you never socialized with other dogs. At any rate it went well. My mum also had the belief that bullies are like pit bull...come on mum...even pits are sweet heart. She does agree that it's the owners not the dog. I asked her to take the test...she failed. Education is key! Here's a few photo I took of our pleasant afternoon.

Earth Intruders

Not that it really matter but we've been keeping a close eye on Momo's (one of his many nicknames) ears. When we got him his ears where down and slowly over the past month they've risen an inch or so. Well today I notice that his right one is almost completely erect and the right...not so much.

After a crazy delicious dinner at the Green Door we went for a walk in the Manor Park area.
